Lucchini's underdog story provides inspiring spark for Senators

Ottawa Sun/Ken Warren

Somewhere along the line, maybe when he was traded from the American Hockey League’s Laval Rocket to the Belleville Senators for a loonie 15 months ago, Jake Lucchini might have wondered whether it was time to hang up the blades.

Or perhaps follow the lead of his brother, Jeremy, by opting to continue his professional career in Europe.

Instead, Lucchini kept the NHL hopes alive long enough to be able to write the compelling underdog story that unfolded at Canadian Tire Centre on New Year’s Day.

At the tender age of 27 years and 236 days, Lucchini scored his first NHL goal, the winning goal, in the Ottawa Senators 3-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. The night finished with him being honoured by the 18,231 fans in the arena, including his mother, Sandy, after being named the game’s third star.
